A1, A2 or A3? The Poster Size Guide for Every Room (UK)

You've found the perfect print - now comes the tricky bit: what size do you actually buy? Get it right and your art looks intentional and expensive. Get it wrong and even a gorgeous piece can look lost or overwhelming. This quick UK size guide takes the guesswork out of it.

UK poster sizes explained

Most of our prints come in standard A sizes. Here's roughly how they compare:

A5 (148 x 210mm): Small and sweet. Great for shelves, desks, clusters and gallery-wall accents.

A4 (210 x 297mm): The classic. Perfect as a supporting piece or in a grouped set.

A3 (297 x 420mm): A confident mid-size. Works solo in smaller spaces or as part of a gallery wall.

A2 (420 x 594mm): A proper statement. Ideal above a desk, console or in a hallway.

A1 (594 x 841mm): The showstopper. A single A1 can anchor an entire room.

Which size for which room?

Above the sofa: Go big - A1 or A2, or a set of A2/A3 prints. Aim for art that spans around two-thirds the width of the sofa.

Bedroom: A1 or A2 above the bed for impact; A3 on side walls.

Hallway: A2 or a column of A3 prints draws the eye down a narrow space.

Small rooms and box bedrooms: One A2 statement beats lots of little prints.

Gallery wall: Mix sizes - one A1 or A2 hero, supported by A3, A4 and A5 pieces.

Pro tip: Before you buy, cut newspaper or paper to your chosen size and tape it to the wall. It's the easiest way to see how the print will actually sit in the space.

A quick rule of thumb

When in doubt, size up. The most common decorating mistake is choosing art that's too small for the wall. A slightly larger print almost always looks more deliberate and high-end.
